The Eastern and Southern Africa Water and Sanitation Regulators’ Association, the World Bank, IWA and Athena Infonomics jointly convened a session at the 20th AFWA Congress on “Governance and Regulation for Inclusive Urban Sanitation.” Gustavo Saltiel (World Bank), Yvonne Magawa (ESAWAS), Eng. Jacques Nzitonda (Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority), Eng. Exaudi Fatael Maro (Electricity and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority, Tanzania) and Prof. Kala Vairavamoorthy (International Water Association) presented their institutions’ ongoing work on sanitation sector regulation and new approaches they are introducing. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion on issues including different models for sanitation sector regulation, lessons learned from the water sector, and emerging approaches for regulating and professionalizing non-sewered sanitation services.

CWIS MLE LB1: Monitoring Tools for Fecal Sludge Collection & Transport

Among the 8 CWIS cities, 5 of them have developed and implemented some form of monitoring tool for fecal sludge management (FSM).
